PREBIOTICS

TRIO OF PREBIOTIC FIBERS:

  • FRUIT OLIGOSACCHARIDES (FOS)
  • Inulin
  • Mannanoligosaccharides (MOS) from brewer's yeast

FOS, MOS and INULIN are dietary fibers, i.e. indigestible carbohydrates, of course, important for both human and animal nutrition.

Chemically, FOS and inulin are fructans (carbohydrates consisting of repeating fructose units) with a short chain (FOS) and a long chain (INULIN), and are especially common in foods such as chicory and Jerusalem artichoke.

MOS are always dietary fibers, but consist of mannose repeats and are mainly derived from the walls of yeast.

All three substances act as prebiotics, i.e. they can be beneficial for health by regulating the gut microbiota, i.e. a collection of millions of microorganisms that are common to the intestinal tract of various mammals.

These microorganisms have a positive and vital effect on the health of the host. ((Suchodolski, 2011)).

Indeed, there are several studies that consistently highlight the symbiosis between health maintenance and gut microbiota balance.

How do prebiotic fibers positively affect the microbiota?

Humans and other mammals, including dogs and cats, lack all the enzymes needed to break down plant fibers (such as fructo-oligosaccharides and inulin) in the gut (Flint HJ, 2012), so when they are consumed and enter the small intestine, they are not digested but fermented by bacteria in the colonic microbiota, thereby benefiting certain groups of beneficial bacteria (such as Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium).

Probiotics:

  • ENTEROCOCUS FAECIUM DSM 10663/NCIMB 10415 (35 X 10^9 CFU/g)

What are probiotics? In the feed sector, these are so-called zootechnical additives that stabilize the intestinal flora, i.e. microorganisms that, when administered to animals, have a positive effect on their intestinal flora; (Europeo, 2003) they can actually colonize the intestine of the host animal, exerting a beneficial effect on it.

The application of probiotic microorganisms to the intestinal mucosa of the host is considered a critical step for colonization and further interaction with the host epithelium and its immune system. (Mohsen Hanifeh, 2021).
